About this place
Baharampur is a historic colonial-era town set along the Hooghly River in West Bengal, serving as the headquarters of the Murshidabad district. Once the first centre of the East India Company in India, it grew from a flourishing 17th-century river port into a fortified British cantonment after 1757. The town’s past as a silk-trading hub, shaped by the Roy zamindar family and later by British, Dutch, and French companies, still echoes in its local crafts and markets.
Today it offers travelers a low-key blend of riverside scenery, regional sweets, and access to cottage industries producing silk, muslin, and distinctive metalwork. The riverside road is ideal for an afternoon drive or stroll, and the annual International Theater Festival draws visitors between October and December.
