About this place
Bago (formerly Pegu) is the fourth-largest city in Myanmar, lying along a busy travel corridor between Yangon and points north. For many travelers it is a brief stop, but those who linger discover a spread-out city dotted with golden pagodas rising from lush greenery. The sunset view from Mahazedi Pagoda is a highlight, showing the reclining Buddha framed by a sea of treetops and spires.
Most of the main sights can be tackled in half a day — handy if you are swapping buses or trains — and the compact historic core is walkable when the weather cooperates. Motorcycle and tuk-tuk rides are easy to arrange for wider exploration.

Planning Tips
- Beware of bus stop scams — Buses from the south sometimes drop passengers a few kilometers outside the center; stay on the bus and insist on going to the main station.
- Use shared transport — Shared tuk‑tuks cost 200 kyat per ride; walk away from drivers demanding 1,000 kyat and flag a passing one instead.
- Ask for a quiet room — If staying along the main road, request a room at the back to avoid the constant truck and bus traffic heading east.
- Motorbike rental — A full-day motorbike hire can be negotiated to around 6,000 kyat and is worth it if you plan to explore from dawn to dusk.
