About this place
Awka is the capital of Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria and a major educational and administrative hub. It is home to Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Paul University, giving the city a noticeable student presence that shapes its daily energy. Positioned roughly midway between Onitsha and Enugu, Awka stands as one of the oldest settlements in Igboland, rooted in the Nri civilisation that produced Sub-Saharan Africa’s earliest documented bronze works.
The city has seen steady growth through the 2020s, expanding as a regional center while retaining deep cultural traditions. Visitors encounter a compact state capital where modern institutions sit alongside a living heritage of masquerade festivals and craftwork.
