About this place
Hawassa sits on the eastern shore of Lake Awasa in Southern Ethiopia, a growing resort town that blends lakeside relaxation with a lively local atmosphere. It is a common stop for African overland travelers and a popular weekend escape, with a compact center that makes it easy to explore on foot.
Recent improvements have given the town cobblestone streets and a walking path along the lake, while a growing number of cafes, bars, and restaurants reflect its increasingly cosmopolitan feel. The town is also home to a respected university, adding youthful energy to the mix.

Things to Do
- Cycle around Lake Awasa — a 55-kilometer route circles the lake, passing through shoreline villages with cacti and wild olive trees. The opposite shore is especially scenic, though be cautious of unsupervised children who may become rowdy.
- Evening drinks by the lake — where Piazza Road meets the shore, small bars serve fresh fried fish and cold St. George draft beer. It's a great spot to watch the sunset over the water.
- Explore on foot — the compact town center along Piazza Road is best discovered by walking, with cafes, small bars, and restaurants scattered along the way.
- Monday market day — the weekly market brings extra vibrancy to town and is worth timing your visit to experience local commerce and color.

Best Time to Visit
- November through March — the driest and most comfortable season, with warm days, cool nights, very little rain, and plenty of sunshine for cycling and lakeside relaxing.
- Outside the rainy periods — avoid the wetter months when trails and village paths become muddy and lake cycling is less enjoyable.
- Monday market day — if your schedule aligns, plan to be in town on a Monday to catch the lively weekly market.

Planning Tips
- Book bus tickets in advance — Sky Bus and Selam services from Addis Ababa often sell out, especially for same-day travel. Tickets can be bought a day or two ahead at offices near Meskel Square.
- Expect evening arrivals — buses from the capital frequently run late; an arrival around 21:00 or later is common, so have your accommodation sorted in advance.
- Bring cash — Dashen Bank on Piazza Road has Visa and MasterCard ATMs, but smaller businesses and transport are cash-based.
- Walk or take a rickshaw — the town is small enough to cover on foot; when needed, blue motorbike rickshaws are plentiful and rides cost only a few birr.
