About this place
Auckland occupies a narrow isthmus between the Waitemata and Manukau harbours, making it New Zealand’s largest city and a natural base for exploring the North Island. The central business district hugs the Waitemata waterfront, where glass towers, ferry terminals, and repurposed heritage buildings sit side by side. Visitors tend to gravitate here for the widest choice of dining, accommodation, and transport links.
Māori settlement of the isthmus dates back to around 1350, and the city grew rapidly after becoming the colonial capital in 1841. That political role shifted to Wellington in 1865, but Auckland kept its commercial momentum. Today the downtown streets mix Victorian-era landmarks with modern precincts, giving the centre a layered, walkable character that rewards a few days of unhurried browsing.

Planning Tips
- Download the AT (Auckland Transport) app for bus, train, and ferry timetables — the Britomart centre also stocks free printed schedules.
- Use the Auckland Transport journey planner or Google Maps to compare routes; buses and trains are reliable even if travel times can stretch.
- Book an airport shuttle or rideshare in advance — Super Shuttle and Uber are widely used, and rideshare pick‑up requires a short walk from the domestic terminal.
- If driving, note that council car parks and street parking are usually free after 6pm and on weekends, but always read the signage carefully.
- Pack a light rain layer regardless of the season — showers can roll through even in the more stable summer months.
- Check safeswim.org.nz before swimming at inner‑harbour beaches, especially within 48 hours of rainfall.
- For free Wi‑Fi, head to the public library (100 MB per IP per day) or the SkyCity food courts.
