About this place
Atyrau sits at the northern edge of the Caspian Sea in western Kazakhstan, where the Ural River meets the sea — the meaning of its Kazakh name. Founded as a wooden fort in 1645 and known as Guriev for centuries, the city transformed during the Soviet era with fish canneries, wartime industrial transplants, and later oil and gas processing. Today it’s a regional center with a mix of industrial heritage and riverfront landmarks.
The city offers a Regional Museum and Art Museum side by side, a paleontology museum beside Retro Park, and a collection of military vehicles in Victory Park. One of the world’s longest pedestrian bridges crosses the Ural River, connecting visitors to riverside walks and views.
