About this place

Last updated Jun 9, 2026

The entertainment capital of the Eastern Seaboard, Atlantic City is New Jersey's most popular resort destination. Founded in the late 19th century as a getaway for Philadelphia workers, its streets are familiar to anyone who's ever played Monopoly. The city's beaches and the famous wood-plank Boardwalk have attracted visitors for more than a century, and the 1976 legalization of casino gambling sparked a revival.

While many visitors come for the casinos, stepping onto the beach is essential to experiencing Atlantic City fully. It remains a legendary resort town, though its casino industry has faced challenges from competition in neighboring states.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 9, 2026
  • Gamble at one of the many casino resorts along the Boardwalk and Marina District — slots, poker, blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat, keno, and sports betting are available.
  • Walk the Boardwalk — the historic, 4-mile-long wooden promenade is the oldest in the United States and a quintessential Atlantic City experience.
  • Relax on the beach — the city's beaches have drawn visitors for over a century and are a key part of the resort's appeal.
  • Ride a rolling chair — hire an old-fashioned, shaded surrey pushed by a guide along the Boardwalk (minimum fare around $5 plus tip).
  • Bike the Boardwalk — bike rentals are available; bikes are permitted on the Boardwalk from 6:30 AM to 10 AM during summer.
  • Visit the Marina District — home to casinos like Borgata, Harrah's, and Golden Nugget, reachable via the Atlantic City Jitney.
  • Explore other Jersey Shore beaches — Ocean City, The Wildwoods, and Cape May are a short drive south, each with their own boardwalks, amusements, and shops.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 9, 2026
  • Consider flying into Philadelphia International Airport — it offers more flight options and is about an hour's drive or train ride from Atlantic City.
  • The NJ Transit train from Philadelphia's 30th Street Station costs $12.70 one-way and takes about 90 minutes — a budget-friendly option.
  • Parking can be expensive; look for free lots near the north end shore or use the Jitney ($2.25) to get around.
  • For safety, stick to well-traveled areas near the Boardwalk and casinos, especially at night.
  • If you win big at the slots, ask the casino for an escort or request winnings by check for security.
  • Free alcoholic drinks are provided to gamblers at casinos, but options are limited unless you're a high-roller.
  • Charter bus trips from other parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York often include casino chips or food vouchers — a popular deal with senior travelers.
