About this place
Asunción, the capital of Paraguay, offers travelers an authentic South American experience well off the typical tourist circuit. It's a city where colonial history, modern commerce, and a laid-back atmosphere coexist. The metropolitan area is a demographically young and cosmopolitan hub, home to over two million people. While it may lack the blockbuster attractions of other continental capitals, visitors who explore its streets will discover a rich cultural scene with intriguing museums, theaters, and art galleries, alongside a growing number of excellent hotels and restaurants.
The city's architecture tells a story of its past, from restored colonial houses in the historic center to Italianate public buildings and contemporary glassy towers. Tree-lined avenues, small parks, and shady squares are scattered throughout the downtown grid. From July to September, the entire city is brightened by the vibrant pink and yellow blooms of the lapacho trees. A relatively new riverside promenade, the costanera, has become a beloved spot for recreation and enjoying city views.

Planning Tips
- Learn some basic Spanish phrases before you go, as English is not widely spoken by waitstaff, bus drivers, or in markets.
- Use taxis and make sure the driver uses the meter, or negotiate a fare beforehand; a 30% surcharge is common late at night and on Sundays.
- Be extremely cautious when crossing streets; drivers often treat stop signs and traffic lights as optional, and buses rarely slow down.
- For urban bus travel, you will need a rechargeable JAHA or Más card, which can be purchased at supermarkets and kiosks.
- Use insect repellent throughout the day to avoid mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue fever, which is a frequent risk.
- Plan shopping for weekdays and Saturdays, as most commercial activity in the city center shuts down completely on Sunday, shifting instead to the Villa Morra and Carmelitas neighborhoods.
