About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Astana, Kazakhstan's capital on the banks of the Esil River, is a planned city of futuristic architecture. Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa designed its master plan, and international names like Norman Foster contributed landmark buildings, creating a skyline of skyscrapers and bold geometric forms. The city blends this modern vision with layers of Soviet history, from its origins as a Russian military outpost to its role in the Virgin Lands Campaign.

The city is divided by the river: the new town on the south bank features the wide Nurzhol Bulvar connecting the presidential palace with Bayterek Tower, while the older northern bank offers a more lived-in feel with hotels, restaurants, and everyday city life. While it doesn't match the cosmopolitan buzz of Almaty or major Western capitals, Astana has its own distinct charm and a growing range of cultural and recreational offerings.
