About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Ashdod is a dynamic coastal city on Israel’s Mediterranean shore, roughly halfway between Tel Aviv and Gaza. With a population of about 235,000, it is a young, well-planned city that has grown rapidly over recent decades, regularly earning praise for its attractive design and beautiful southern beach areas. Its long history stretches back to biblical times, when the Philistines brought the captured Ark of the Covenant here, though few ancient traces remain in the modern city.

Today Ashdod is known for its remarkably diverse population, with Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Morocco, Georgia, Ethiopia, France, and Argentina creating a rich cultural tapestry. It also hosts Israel’s busiest industrial port, handling a majority of the country’s imports and exports, and serves as a frequent cruise-ship stop offering convenient access to Jerusalem.
