About this place
Asahikawa is the second-largest city on Hokkaido, set at the confluence of four rivers and surrounded by hills. It holds the title of Japan's coldest city, yet its riverfront cycling paths and nearby mountain escapes make it a rewarding stop in any season.
The city blends a relaxed, rural feel with a walkable downtown — over 740 bridges connect its districts. It serves as an excellent base for day trips to the Daisetsuzan mountain range and the pastoral landscapes of Biei and Furano. While less visited by international travelers, Asahikawa draws many domestic tourists to its well-known zoo and nationally famous ramen shops.

Planning Tips
- Use the train station resources — The spacious JR station houses a tourist information center with English-speaking staff, free WiFi, and a hotel booking desk.
- Book the Furano-Biei Norokko Train — This scenic summer train between Furano, Biei, and Asahikawa requires mandatory reservations and runs only three times daily.
- Budget for Sapporo buses — Round-trip bus tickets from Sapporo cost about ¥470; services run frequently and take just over two hours in summer, slightly longer in winter.
- Check train frequency before departure — Local trains to Biei, Furano, Wakkanai, and Abashiri can be sparse; limited express services offer more convenience and should be prioritized when timing is tight.
