About this place
Arkhangelsk, a regional center of 350,000 in Northwestern Russia, sits on both banks of the Northern Dvina River near the White Sea. Founded in 1584 as Russia's first major trade port with Western Europe, the city later developed as a quiet provincial hub. It gained renewed prominence during World War II as a key destination for Allied sea convoys. Today, Arkhangelsk serves as a gateway to the Russian North and is part of the Silver Ring of cultural and historical centers.
The city’s economy revolves around timber, paper, and its large commercial and fishing port. While often a transit point for travelers heading to the Solovetsky Islands, Arkhangelsk has an active cultural scene that justifies a dedicated visit. The compact city center along the river embankment holds most attractions.

Planning Tips
- Pack for the season — bring light layers and sun protection for long summer days; in winter, prepare for -20°C cold and biting wind.
- Learn basic Russian phrases — public transport, taxis, and local signage rely heavily on Russian, especially outside the city center.
- Arrange winter taxis in advance — services thin out after evening rush hour, so call rather than wait in extreme cold.
- Budget for imported goods — souvenirs, meals, and everyday items often cost more here than in Moscow or St. Petersburg.
- Secure Solovki connections early — if using Arkhangelsk as a transit point, book onward travel and accommodations well ahead of peak summer.
