About this place
Arica is a relaxed seaside resort town in northern Chile, home to about 223,000 people. Known as the "city of the eternal spring," it delivers mild temperatures and sunshine virtually every day of the year, making it a reliable beach-and-outdoor destination. Its location makes it the natural northern gateway to Peru and Bolivia, with strong cross-border ties to nearby Tacna.
The city anchors the fertile Azapa Valley, where olives and vegetables thrive in the oasis landscape. Arica is quiet, safe, and popular with both Chilean and Bolivian beachgoers. Travelers often use it as a restful base for exploring the coast, nearby valleys, and onward rail or road routes into neighboring countries.

Things to Do
- Surfing and boogie boarding — Beaches north of town suit beginners, while more experienced surfers head south of El Morro. A surf shop is available downtown, though bringing your own board is advisable.
- Beach days — Swimming and sunbathing along the northern beaches are best in summer, though winter visitors can often claim the sand to themselves. The water stays cold year-round.
- Hiking around Playa Corazones — Trails in the Playa Corazones area offer coastal exploration away from the main beach scene.
- Valley excursions — Visit the olive tree plantations and explore the agricultural landscape of the nearby Azapa Valley.

Planning Tips
- Cross-border logistics — Colectivos to Tacna leave when full and take 1½–2 hours; factor in border opening times (typically 08:00–22:00).
- Stock up on water — Local tap water is not recommended for drinking; large supermarkets like Lider are convenient for bottled water.
- Bus travel from Bolivia — Direct buses from La Paz are the simplest option; connections from Oruro require a transfer at Patacamaya and can be confusing.
