Things to Do

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Boat safari on Lake Chamo — Spot crocodiles at the "crocodile market" and observe hippos and a wide variety of birdlife on a boat trip across the lake.
  • Visit the Dorze villages — Take a bus or tuktuk into the hills above Arba Minch to explore traditional Dorze communities near Chencha, where you can see distinctive beehive-shaped houses and local weaving.
  • Walk to Forty Springs — Hike about 3 km from the Nech Sar park entrance to reach these natural springs; the springs themselves are modest, but the walk offers a good introduction to the park landscape.
  • Hike and wildlife watch on Lake Abayo's shore — Combine a boat ride with a ranger-guided walk on the lake's edge to spot monkeys, hornbills, zebra, dikdik, and various antelope.

  • Late November through mid-March — The prime travel window brings dry conditions, average temperatures around 25.5°C, and low rainfall averaging just 3 mm, making it ideal for park visits and boat safaris.
  • December–January — Peak of the dry season with the most reliable sunshine and comfortable conditions for combining lake activities and highland village walks.
  • February–March — Still firmly within the dry window; temperatures may start to warm toward the upper end of the range, but park and wildlife access remains excellent.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Allow a full day for Nech Sar National Park — The boat safari on Lake Chamo, shore walks on Lake Abayo, and the Forty Springs hike can fill an entire day; confirm fees with the local guide association or at the gate.
  • Consider independent village visits — Public buses to Chencha leave hourly and are inexpensive; you can explore Dorze villages on your own or hire a guide once you arrive. The Dorze Lodge area makes a walkable base.
  • Factor in rain if you push into the shoulder — The dry window tapers off after mid-March; traveling outside this period raises the chance of heavy rain, which can affect roads and some park tracks.
