About this place
Ueno offers a rare window into old Tokyo, far from the high-rise towers and glittering shopping malls found elsewhere in the city. The atmosphere is distinctly down-to-earth, which translates into affordable eating, shopping, and drinking — a refreshing change from more polished districts. Northwest of the well-connected Ueno Station, a cluster of major museums and cultural sites surrounds Ueno Park, the neighborhood's green heart.
While the area feels sketchier than much of Tokyo due to a concentration of sex clubs and red-light businesses southwest of the station, it remains very safe by international standards. The park's cherry blossoms, outstanding national museums, and lively market streets make Ueno a rewarding base for travelers who prefer character over polish.

Things to Do
- City walk through Yanaka — A roughly 3 km, two-hour stroll from the Tokyo National Museum to Sendagi Station. The route threads past the Shitamachi Museum Annexe (a preserved century-old liquor store), the contemporary art gallery SCAI the Bathhouse, the painter Allan West's studio, and numerous temples including Enju-ji — popular with runners for its 'god of strong legs' shrine.
- Yanaka-reien cemetery wander — One of Tokyo's most atmospheric cemeteries, dotted with the neighborhood's stray cats sunning themselves. The footbridge near the train tracks is a favorite spot for watching trains pass below.
- Yanaka Ginza shopping stroll — Descend the Yūyake Dandan (Sunset Stairs) to this classic mid-20th-century shopping street. Vendors sell snacks enjoyed on milk crates curbside, and a beer stand keeps the retro mood alive.
- Cherry-blossom hanami in Ueno Park — Tokyo's most popular outdoor party spot during sakura season. Locals spread blue tarps and feast on grilled dango dumplings, proving the proverb Hana yori dango — dumplings are better than blossoms.
- Trainspotting from the Yanaka bridge — The footbridge overlooking the tracks near the cemetery offers a 360° view that draws train enthusiasts.

Things to See
- Tokyo National Museum — A vast complex holding nearly 100,000 objects spanning Japanese history from the Jomon period to the 20th century. Highlights include the Honkan (samurai armor, ukiyo-e prints, tea-ceremony art), the archaeological Heiseikan, the Asian-art Toyokan, and the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures, housed in a striking 1999 building by Yoshio Taniguchi. English descriptions available.
- Ueno Zoo — Located within Ueno Park and a perennial favorite, especially during family outings in cherry-blossom season.
- Asakura Museum of Sculpture, Taitō — The former home and studio of an early-20th-century sculptor, now open as a museum. Found along the Yanaka city-walk route.
- Shitamachi Museum Annexe — A preserved, century-old liquor store that captures the feel of Tokyo's old downtown. A small but evocative stop on the walk toward Yanaka.
- Ueno Park — More than just a green space, the park is the cultural hub of the district, gathering museums, the zoo, and Shinobazu Lake's food stalls in one walkable expanse.

Planning Tips
- Arrive via Keisei Ueno Station from Narita — The Keisei Skyliner and most limited expresses terminate just south of the main JR station, making Ueno a convenient first stop.
- Navigate by station exits — Ueno, Okachimachi, Naka-okachimachi, and Ueno-okachimachi stations are tightly linked by the Ameyoko shopping street. Walking through the bazaar is a practical and entertaining way to transfer.
- Watch your belongings and ignore hustlers — While the area is very safe, exercise the usual city caution with scammers and touts, especially in market zones and near bars southwest of the station.
- Check museum English support — The Tokyo National Museum offers some English descriptions, but smaller venues may not. A translation app can be handy.
