About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Aomori Prefecture occupies the northernmost tip of Honshu and rewards travelers with rugged national parks, deep-seated festival traditions, and some of Japan’s best apples and seafood. The prefecture is commonly split into three characterful regions — Tsugaru, Nanbu, and Shimokita — each with its own dialect and local pride.

Visitors come for cherry blossoms at Hirosaki Castle in spring, towering nebuta lantern floats in summer, fiery autumn foliage along Oirase Gorge, and surreal “snow monsters” on the Hakkoda mountains in winter. The mix of Shinkansen access, coastal ferries, and rural trains makes it practical to explore, though a car opens up quieter corners.

  • Join the Nebuta Festival — In August, rent a haneto costume and dance through the streets of Aomori City amid giant illuminated floats, taiko drums, and flute music.
  • Hike Oirase Gorge — Walk a scenic riverside trail past waterfalls and brilliant autumn foliage in Towada-Hachimantai National Park during the fall.
  • Ski or snowboard at Mt. Hakkoda and Ajigasawa — Deep powder and “snow monster” trees make these areas a winter highlight from December into March.
  • Picnic at Hirosaki Castle — Spread a blanket under one of Japan’s most celebrated cherry blossom canopies during late April and early May.
  • See rice-paddy art in Inakadate Village — These enormous living murals, created from different colored rice plants, are at their best in summer and early autumn.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Reserve festival accommodation early — Hotels in Aomori and Hirosaki fill up months ahead of the August Nebuta period.
  • Consider a Japan Rail Pass — The Tohoku Shinkansen covers the long haul from Tokyo, and local JR trains serve many attractions.
  • Pick up a rental car for rural exploration — Destinations such as the Shimokita Peninsula and secluded onsen towns are much easier with your own wheels.
  • Pack layers year-round — Evenings can be cool near the coast and in the mountains, while winter demands full cold-weather gear.
  • Learn a few local greetings — While standard Japanese works, attempting a Tsugaru-ben phrase can spark warm reactions.
