About this place
Antalya is the vibrant heart of the Turkish Riviera, a sprawling Mediterranean metropolis that masterfully blends ancient history with modern resort life. The city's historic core, Kaleiçi, is a maze of narrow streets and Ottoman-era architecture surrounding a Roman harbor, while the long coastal strips of Konyaaltı to the west and Lara to the east are lined with beaches, hotels, and amenities. As a gateway to the Pamphylian coast, it offers access to remarkable archaeological sites and the stunning Taurus Mountains, making it more than just a sun-and-sea destination.
While tourism is the city's main engine, Antalya has a distinct identity beyond its resort strips. With a metropolitan population of 2.7 million, it functions as a major Turkish city with bustling bazaars, a growing arts scene, and a dynamic food culture. Its history stretches back to its founding by King Attalos II of Pergamon, and its streets have hosted everyone from the Apostle Paul to the 14th-century explorer Ibn Battuta, giving the city a deep, layered past waiting to be explored.

Planning Tips
- Use contactless credit cards or an Antalyakart for easy and affordable travel on trams and buses throughout the city.
- The AntRay T1A tram connects the airport terminals to the city center in about 50 minutes and is a cheap alternative to a taxi.
- Book accommodation in the historic Kaleiçi district for an atmospheric stay close to major sights, or choose Lara for direct access to the long sandy beaches and resort hotels.
- For a day trip to the ruins at Perge, negotiating with a taxi driver for a private tour can be an effective option, while such an arrangement for Aspendos might be pricey.
- Shopping is a major activity, with everything from the modern MarkAntalya AVM to local farmers' markets offering fresh produce and local goods.
- Be aware that many hotel and tourist areas list prices in Euros alongside Turkish Lira.
- You can travel by bus along the coast to nearby resort towns like Side and Alanya using frequent local operators, which is a good alternative to long-distance coach companies.
