About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Ankara, the capital of Turkey, sits on the vast Central Anatolian plateau. Once a modest provincial town, it was deliberately chosen as the new capital in 1923, a symbolic shift from the Ottoman legacy of Istanbul. Today, it's a sprawling, modern metropolis of nearly 5.2 million people, often seen as a transit hub for Cappadocia but holding its own wealth of history and culture. The city's heart beats through its museums, galleries, and mosques, telling the story of Anatolia from the Hittites and Romans to the founding of the modern Turkish Republic.

The city center stretches from the historic Ulus district, home to the original parliament and the equestrian statue of Atatürk, south through Sıhhiye to the modern hub of Kızılay. East of Ulus lies the ancient Citadel (Hisar), with its hilltop castle and the Ottoman-era Hamamönü neighborhood. Further south, upscale districts like Kavaklıdere and Çankaya house embassies and the city's finest hotels and restaurants. Locals are generally friendly and helpful, and while English is spoken in academic and diplomatic circles, having a translation app can be useful, especially outside the city center.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Purchase a Başkent Kart from a kiosk or metro station for convenient travel on buses, metro, and the suburban railway (Başkentray).
  • For airport transfers, consider the cheaper EGO bus (Route 442) or the Havaş express coach; the Belko Air service no longer runs.
  • High-speed trains (YHT) connect Ankara to Istanbul (4.5 hours), Konya (90 minutes), and Sivas (2.5 hours) — a great option for regional exploration.
  • The main bus operators are Metro Turizm, Pamukkale, and Flixbus for intercity travel.
  • Traffic is a hazard; exercise caution when crossing streets and be aware of poor sidewalk conditions at night.
  • Download a translation app — while English is spoken in academic and diplomatic circles, it is less common in shops and restaurants.
  • For emergencies, call 112 or approach any police officer. The tourist police are based at AŞTİ bus station.
