About this place
Andijon is a major city in Uzbekistan's Ferghana Valley, sitting close to the Kyrgyzstan border. With roughly 748,000 residents, it's one of the region's largest population centers and a key hub for trade and transport. The city is loosely divided by its central rail line into the historic northern Eski Shahar (Old City) and the southern Yangi Bozor (New Market), which includes numbered Soviet-era microdistricts where Russian influence is still visible.
While often seen as a conservative city, Andijon surprises visitors with a growing coffee scene, karaoke venues, ice skating, and nightlife options — particularly in the microdistricts. It functions as both a gateway to valley destinations and a practical base for exploring the eastern reaches of Uzbekistan.

- Social drinking spots — the microdistricts host small watering holes and a newer bar scene, including places like Jiguli Bar, where you can sample draft beer in a group setting.

Best Time to Visit
- August 14 through October 19 — the optimal window, with historical temperatures averaging 22.5°C, low cloud cover near 26.8%, and very little rain.
- Spring (April to early June) — a secondary shoulder season when valley landscapes turn green and temperatures are mild before the summer heat sets in.
- Avoid peak summer — temperatures can climb much higher, and June and July lack the comfort of the late-summer to autumn window.
- Winter — expect cold conditions well below freezing at times, with shorter days and fewer transport options in the region.

Planning Tips
- Train tickets cash-only — intra-valley train tickets (e.g., Andijon–Kokand) may need to be purchased at station ticket offices rather than online.
- Dress modestly — conservative dress is important in the Ferghana Valley; women may want a scarf handy, and shorts are not common in public.
- Shared taxi strategy — drivers gather at the local "Avtovokzal," grouped by destination; agree on the fare before departing, as prices vary by seat and time of day.
- Avoid political discussion — do not ask locals about the 2005 events; steer conversations toward culture, food, and travel.
- Carry cash — som is needed for most transport and smaller cafes; card acceptance is limited outside major hotels.
