About this place
Amman, the capital of Jordan, is a city of contrasts built across a series of hills and valleys. Its ancient history stretches back millennia, from its biblical origins as Rabbath Ammon to its time as the Roman trading hub of Philadelphia. Today, the city is a sprawling modern metropolis, often called the "white city" for its characteristic limestone buildings. While it serves as an excellent base for exploring the wider country, Amman itself offers a rewarding mix of historic ruins, a lively downtown core, and a more cosmopolitan, modern western district.
The city is broadly divided between the older, traditional neighborhoods of East Amman and the affluent, contemporary areas of West Amman. The bustling downtown area, or Balad, is a sensory feast of street markets, local eateries, and historic sites like the Citadel and Roman Amphitheatre. In contrast, West Amman is home to sleek shopping malls, international restaurants, and a growing cultural scene. Despite its rapid modernization, Amman retains a famously welcoming and friendly atmosphere, making it a safe and compelling introduction to the Middle East.

Planning Tips
- Upon arrival, use the Sariyah Airport Express bus for an economical ride into the city, then call an Uber or Careem for the final leg to your hotel to avoid taxi overcharging.
- When using yellow taxis in the city, always ensure the driver resets the meter at the start of your trip. Most in-city trips should cost under 2 JD.
- For destination names, note that the Citadel is locally known as 'al'Aqal'. Having key place names written in Arabic can be very helpful for communicating with taxi drivers.
- Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a very efficient and affordable way to travel between North Station and downtown, avoiding heavy traffic. You can pay by simply tapping a Visa or MasterCard.
- Learning a few basic Arabic phrases is a sign of respect and will enhance your interactions, as general English proficiency can be limited beyond simple greetings.
- While Amman is safe, be aware of a common scam where a friendly person offers a short 'free' ride and then demands an exorbitant fare later. Politely decline such offers.
- If planning trips during Ramadan, research restaurant and store opening hours in advance and be respectful of those fasting by avoiding eating, drinking, and smoking in public during daylight.
