About this place
Altona and St. Pauli form a lively western slice of Hamburg, stretching from the Elbe riverbank to the alternative quarters further inland. Altona began as a 16th‑century fishing village and later thrived as a Danish rival to Hamburg, shaping its independent, open character. The green, mostly residential streets still hold traces of that past, while St. Pauli delivers a completely different energy: dense, multicultural, and anchored by the world‑famous Reeperbahn, a hub of nightlife, theatre, and the city’s red‑light district.
Smaller neighbourhoods add further layers — students and creatives fill the cafés and boutiques of Schanzenviertel and Karolinenviertel, the old village of Ottensen mixes waterside charm with converted factory spaces, and the leafy riverside suburb of Blankenese draws weekend crowds to its beaches and winding lanes. Together the district shifts from gritty portside buzz to quiet elegance within a few S‑Bahn stops.

Things to Do
- Theatre and musicals on the Reeperbahn — St. Pauli packs more stages than most European districts; from vaudeville to large‑scale musicals, you can book a different show almost every night.
- FC St. Pauli football — Catch a match at the Millerntor to experience the famously leftist, anti‑fascist fan culture. Tickets are scarce, so plan ahead.
- Harbour cruises — Several operators near Landungsbrücken run short trips around the container terminals and the Elbe, giving you a water‑level view of the working port.
- Live music — Small clubs and bars along the Reeperbahn and in Schanzenviertel host rock, indie, and electronic acts; check local listings for the night’s lineup.
- Flea‑market browsing — The Flohschanze market and Karolinenviertel’s maker shops offer vintage clothes, vinyl, and local design.

Things to See
- Reeperbahn and Große Freiheit — The legendary party and red‑light street stays busy until dawn; walk through to see neon‑lit bars, sex shops, and street performers.
- Altona waterfront — The riverbank south of Altona station offers views of the Elbe, the fish market, and the district town hall and museum.
- Schulterblatt and Rote Flora — In Schanzenviertel, the repurposed theatre building anchors a lively street of bars, cheap eats, and alternative culture.
- Blankenese village — Ride the S‑Bahn to this leafy millionaire’s hamlet, then wander its steep lanes, small beaches, and the Wednesday‑Friday‑Saturday market.
- Planten un Blomen park gardens — Easily reached from St. Pauli, the Japanese garden, rose garden, and tropical greenhouses are free and especially pleasant in summer.

Best Time to Visit
- Late May to late September — The warmest, sunniest window for harbour boat trips, river‑beach days in Blankenese, and open‑air festivals.
- Weekends — Saturday brings the famous fish market at dawn, while Friday and Saturday nights fuel the Reeperbahn’s peak party scenes.
- Shoulder months (May and September) — Still pleasant but less crowded than midsummer, with plenty of daylight for exploring parks and outdoor cafés.

Planning Tips
- Arrive by Altona station — Second only to Hauptbahnhof, this hub puts you steps from the waterfront and the Ottensen shopping streets.
- Check match schedules early — If you want FC St. Pauli tickets, book as soon as dates are released; the club’s small stadium fills quickly.
- Bring cash for bars and markets — Many smaller spots on the Reeperbahn and in Schanzenviertel still prefer or only accept cash.
- Dress in layers — Even in summer, the river breeze can make evenings cool; a light jacket serves you well for beach‑club sundowners.
- Use the S‑Bahn to Blankenese — The train drops you at the top of the valley; walk straight down to reach the market square and beaches.
