About this place
Aleppo (حلب, Ḥalab) is one of the largest cities in Syria, with a population of over 2 million, and is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its UNESCO World Heritage–listed old city boasts a wealth of historic sites, from ancient mosques and churches to bustling souks and a mighty citadel. Despite the profound damage suffered during the Syrian civil war, Aleppo remains a place of deep cultural heritage and resilient spirit.
This is a fairly conservative city where modest dress is appreciated, and visitors will hear the call to prayer five times a day. Local life moves at a relaxed pace, with a mid-afternoon siesta followed by lively evenings when markets and public squares come alive with food vendors and socializing. Meals are served later than in the U.S.—lunch from 13:00 to 15:00, dinner around 20:00—and Friday is a holy day, with many shops and historic sites closed.
Travel to Aleppo currently requires careful planning: overland access from Damascus or Gaziantep (Turkey) is possible but depends on the latest visa and security advice. Flights operate to several regional hubs including Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, and Amman. Once in the city, taxis are ubiquitous and affordable, and minibuses (serveece) offer a flexible way to get around.

Planning Tips
- Check the latest travel advisories and visa requirements before planning a trip—overland routes from Turkey and Damascus may have restrictions.
- Dress modestly (shirts and trousers for men; non-revealing clothing for women). Headscarves are only required for entering mosques or churches, but gray robes are available at no extra charge.
- Plan around Friday closures: most shops and historic sites will be closed, so use this day for rest or exploring areas that remain open.
- Use licensed taxis for safe and affordable transport within the city. Minibuses (serveece) are a flexible alternative but can get very crowded during rush hour.
- Carry cash for small purchases, as many stalls and smaller shops may not accept cards. The souk is a great place to buy gold, soap, and spices, but prices are better away from main tourist traps.
- Stay clear of buildings that show signs of heavy damage or structural instability, particularly in Salaheddin and surrounding areas.
- For reliable internet access, head to one of the dedicated internet cafes in the new Christian quarter of al-Aziziyeh (e.g., Area 51, Montana, Kool Net) for high-speed connections and discount cards.
