About this place
Alcalá de Henares is a historic university city about 30 km northeast of Madrid. Its compact medieval centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, packed with interesting old buildings and strongly linked to some of Spain's best-known cultural figures. Miguel de Cervantes was baptized here and almost certainly born in the city, while Katherine of Aragon and Cardinal Cisneros also have deep local ties.
The city's Roman roots (Complutum) and later Muslim history give it a layered past that still shapes the streetscape today. Because it sits so close to Madrid and Madrid–Barajas Airport, Alcalá works beautifully as a day trip from the capital or as a convenient first or last stop on a tour of northern Spain.
