About this place
Alappuzha — also called Alleppey — is a compact district headquarters in Kerala, about 70 km south of Cochin. It sits between the Arabian Sea and a web of rivers and canals, earning it the nickname Venice of the East. The town itself is the gateway to Kerala's famous backwaters, with houseboat terminals, ferry jetties, and coir-making yards dotted along the waterfront.
The historic canal network dates to the late 1700s, and today those waterways are the main stage for travel and daily life. Beyond the canals, a long coastline and temple festivals add layers to a visit that can be as active or as slow as you like.

Things to Do
- Houseboat cruise — Rent a furnished kettuvallam for an overnight or multi-day trip through the backwaters. Boats come with a crew, cook, bedroom, and sit-out; some even have air-conditioning. Book through reputable operators rather than last-minute touts for the best value.
- Government ferry ride — Hop on a Kerala State Water Transport Department boat from the jetty opposite the KSRTC bus stand. The Alappuzha–Kottayam run takes about two hours and costs ₹29, passing villages and short stops along the way.
- Coir-factory tour — Coir made from coconut husk is Alappuzha's signature industry. Several larger producers open their workshops to visitors, showing how the fiber is spun into ropes and mats.
- Backwater village experiences — Bamboostix Island Resort organizes overnight canoe trips, bamboo-furniture workshops, music lessons, yoga, and painting classes. Fishing expeditions in a traditional foam boat are also available.
- Cycling the town — Rent a bicycle to explore Alappuzha and its outskirts. Traffic can be unpredictable, so stay alert, but it is a flexible way to reach quieter canal-side lanes.

Things to See
- The canal-laced cityscape — Alappuzha's narrow waterways, bridges, and busy jetties are a sight in themselves. A boat ride, even a short ferry, reveals waterfront homes, coir workshops, and lush coconut groves.
- Ambalapuzha temple festival — Five decorated elephants carry the Krishna idol in a 14‑km procession with live music. Non-Hindus are generally welcome on temple grounds, and the festival's rose-colored palpayasam milk sweet is a must-try.
- Alappuzha Beach — The long sandy shoreline near town is a place for sunset walks and watching fishing boats come in. Bring a camera for the interplay of sea, sand, and old piers.

Best Time to Visit
- Late November to mid-April — This is the most comfortable stretch, with average temperatures around 27.4°C, low daily rain near 2.1 mm, and plenty of sunshine for houseboat trips and temple festivals.
- June to August (monsoon season) — Heavy rains and strong winds are guaranteed, but the landscape turns vivid green and “monsoon tourism” is growing. Ideal if you enjoy dramatic skies and don't mind getting wet.
- Shoulder weeks in October–November and late April — Transition periods between monsoon and dry season can offer fewer crowds and lower houseboat rates, though weather is less predictable.

Planning Tips
- Book houseboats directly — Reserving online with a reputable operator almost always beats walk-up touts on price and reliability, especially in the high season.
- Use ferries for cheap sightseeing — Government boats run between Alappuzha and Kottayam (about two hours, ₹29 as of early 2026). Earplugs help against engine noise, and you can return by bus if needed.
- Negotiate auto-rickshaw fares upfront — Agree on a price before you get in, or check with the tourist office for current rate guidance.
- Pack for the rain — Even outside the monsoon, brief showers are possible. A light rain jacket and waterproof bag for electronics are sensible year-round.
- Respect temple customs — Although entry is more open here, some inner areas may still be restricted. Dress modestly and follow local cues during festivals.
