About this place
Al-Hasakah is the capital of Syria’s northeastern Al-Hasakah Governorate and the country’s eighth-largest city. Home to around 180,000 people, it is known for its rich ethnic tapestry — Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians, and smaller Armenian communities live side by side. The city sits on a plain where irrigated cotton fields and oil discovery shaped its modern economy.
Today, the city operates within an autonomous Kurdish-led administration. Travel remains complex, with overland arrival via car or minibus as the only practical option. Expect multiple security checkpoints when moving through the region.

Planning Tips
- Check current security conditions — the political and security situation is fluid; verify the status of checkpoints and routes before traveling by car or minibus.
- Plan for self-sufficiency — bring essential supplies, cash, and medications, as tourist services and reliable infrastructure are extremely limited.
- Dress for temperature swings — spring and autumn days are warm but nights can be cool, so pack layers; summers require strong sun protection and hydration.
- Respect local customs — this is a conservative, multi-ethnic region under autonomous administration; modest dress and cultural sensitivity are essential.
