About this place
Fayum is a forgotten gem off Egypt's beaten track, lying west of the Nile about 90 km from Cairo. Rich layers of history — from prehistoric whale fossils to the cult of the crocodile god Sobek — give the area a distinct identity far removed from the usual Nile-side temples. The ancient city was once known as Crocodilopolis, and traces of Greek and Roman renamings still echo in archaeological sites around the region.
Today, Fayum offers travelers a blend of desert landscapes, lakeshore villages, and artisan traditions. Lake Qaroun anchors the north, while protected areas farther out protect extraordinary fossil beds. The city itself is a working regional hub, but the real draw lies in day trips to pottery workshops, eco-lodges, and the quiet countryside.

Things to Do
- Buy local pottery in Tunis Village — southwest of Lake Qaroun, this village is known for glazed ceramics and is a prime stop for art lovers.
- Explore artisan villages — El Nazla offers distinctive pottery, Desya is famous for carpets, and Al A'lam–Ka'aby specializes in palm-fibre crafts.
- Sample Fayumi cuisine at a lakeside eco-lodge — restaurants in Tunis Village and around Lake Qaroun serve regional dishes in a scenic setting.
- Take a microbus adventure from Cairo — the informal transit network (from Ramsis Square, Remaya Square, or El-Moneeb) is an experience in itself.

Planning Tips
- Getting there is an adventure — microbuses run from several points in Cairo and Giza, and slow trains also serve the route.
- Base yourself by interest — choose a city-centre hotel in Fayum, an eco-lodge in Tunis Village, or accommodation near Wadi Rayan for early starts.
- Pack layers — even in mild seasons, desert nights can be cool; a jacket is useful when temperatures drop below 10°C.
- Check local guidance for remote sites — Wadi El Hitan and other protected areas may require planning for permits and road conditions.
