About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Basra (Arabic: البصرة Al Baṣrah) is Iraq's third largest city with a population of over 2 million (2017), situated along the Shatt al-Arab river — the confluence of the Euphrates and the Tigris. Its network of canals and creeks once earned it the nickname "Venice of the East," and the surrounding riverbanks are exceptionally fertile, home to the world's largest forest of date palms.

Founded in 636 CE, Basra grew into a flourishing commercial and cultural center from around 1200 AD onward. The city was under Portuguese protection from 1523 until it was captured by the Ottomans in 1668, remaining part of the Ottoman Empire until the end of World War I. In more recent decades, Basra was heavily affected by the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s and a subsequent rebellion, losing much of its cultural heritage.

Today, Basra is also on the front lines of climate change, with summer temperatures reaching extreme highs. While the city has physically recovered from past conflicts, it remains off the beaten path for most leisure travelers — most foreign visitors are here for nearby oil and gas facilities. However, remnants of its former glory can still be explored by the intrepid traveler.

  • Tour the modest churches — while not all hold services, custodians are often available to show visitors around.
  • Keep an eye out for UNESCO-funded restoration projects in the old quarters, begun in 2018, that are gradually bringing some derelict historical houses back to life.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Fly into Basra International Airport, which has daily connections from Dubai, Istanbul, Beirut, and Amman, plus domestic flights from Erbil and Baghdad.
  • Use taxis or ride-hailing services for getting around — they are plentiful and inexpensive. Avoid relying on the chaotic public transport or walking.
  • For accommodations, consider low- and mid-range options beyond luxury hotels; many have limited online presence, so it's best to arrange in advance.
  • Do not drink tap water — bottled or treated water is essential.
  • Check current travel advisories before planning a trip; border crossings from Kuwait and Iran are particularly risky for foreign travelers according to sources.
