About this place
Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates, quietly situated on the UAE's western Gulf coast. As part of the greater Dubai–Sharjah metropolitan area, it offers a more low-key, traditional pace while keeping the major cities within easy reach. Its 16‑km sandy beach is the main draw, along with mangroves, desert, and a historic market.
With a population of about 230,000 (2004 estimate) in an area of roughly 460 km², Ajman feels compact and straightforward to navigate. Visitors can split days between the coast, wildlife spots, and modest cultural sights, then use taxis or shared transport for short trips into neighboring emirates.

Planning Tips
- Use unmetered Ajman taxis for better fares — look for the local orange-and-white cabs and agree on a price before setting off, especially to Sharjah or Dubai.
- Carry cash for markets and shared rides — small notes and coins help at Souk Saleh, the Iranian souq, and the informal shared-taxi stops in the Somali area.
- Base yourself near the beach or Corniche — staying at a shoreline hotel keeps you steps from the water and close to evening cafés and abra stations.
- Tap water is safe but tastes slightly salty — it comes from desalination plants, so use it for teeth and tea while relying on bottled water for plain drinking.
