About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Mizoram is a tranquil, mountainous state in extreme northeastern India, bordered by Myanmar and Bangladesh. Known as the land of the Blue Mountains, it offers a landscape of evergreen hills, dense bamboo forests, plunging gorges, and sparkling waterfalls. Settlements, including the capital Aizawl, are perched on mountain ridges — a legacy of the region's tribal history. The Mizo people are famously hospitable, English is widely spoken, and the state enjoys one of India's highest literacy rates. Women are highly visible in public life and run most shops, while the overall crime rate is remarkably low, making it one of the safest destinations in Northeast India.

  • Vantawng Fall — set amid thick bamboo forests near Thenzawl, this is Mizoram's highest waterfall, with an overnight cottage and cafeteria available.
  • Rihdil Lake (Myanmar) — visit the heart-shaped lake just across the Indo-Myanmar border near Zokhawthar; walk or bike from the border post and enjoy boat rides.
  • Champhai rice plains — drive through emerald rice fields framed by the smoky blue hills of Myanmar; the night sky from a government lodge here is spectacularly star-filled.
  • Mizoram State Museum — an ethnographic museum in Aizawl with galleries on Mizo textiles, history, art, and zoology; request a guide to fully appreciate the collections.
  • Reiek model Mizo Village — explore a traditional village near Aizawl, stay overnight in a government cottage, and take in the cliff-top mountain views.

  • Late October to early December — this period offers the most comfortable weather, with average temperatures around 16.8°C, very low rainfall (1.7 mm daily average), and plenty of sunshine.
  • February to mid-May — a longer spring window with pleasantly warming temperatures (averaging 19°C), minimal precipitation (2 mm daily average), and even more sunshine hours, ideal for trekking and outdoor exploration.
  • Avoid the monsoon (approx. June–September) — heavy rains make roads slippery, trekking trails muddy, and forest areas leech-infested, significantly reducing comfort and accessibility.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Secure your Inner Line Permit early — temporary permits last 15 days, while regular 6-month permits require a local sponsor; arrange well before travel.
  • Use shared Sumos for inter-town travel — TATA Sumo shared taxis connect towns affordably on a per-seat basis; book ahead at counters in Aizawl's Dawrpui or Zarkawt areas.
  • Hire a private car for comfort — given the extremely bumpy bus rides, shelling out extra for a rented SUV or car (approx. ₹15/km plus night halt charges) greatly improves the journey.
  • Carry cash and Indian rupees — Indian currency is accepted even at border attractions like Rihdil Lake; ATMs may be sparse outside Aizawl.
  • Respect photography rules — at the Mizoram State Museum and some other sites, photography is prohibited without prior staff permission.
