About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Ahilyanagar (formerly Ahmednagar) carries over 500 years of history, with roots reaching back to the Nizamshahi dynasty in 1490. Later chapters include the Mughals under Shah Jahan, the Peshwas, and the British, leaving a layered heritage across the city. Today it sits in west-central Maharashtra, about 120 km east of Pune and a similar distance from Aurangabad.

This is a place where local food culture shines — from roadside dhabas serving gauran chicken to beloved sweet shops. The compact core lends itself to walking and rickshaw rides, making it easy to sample the city's casual, unhurried rhythm.

Planning Tips

  • Arrange accommodation ahead — with no private hotels available, coordinate a local stay or book in a nearby larger city before arriving.
  • Trains connect via Pune — the rail line runs toward Manmand; direct trains from Mumbai are not available, so plan connections accordingly.
  • Use rickshaws and your feet — the city is easy to navigate by walking, bicycle, or auto rickshaw, with city buses as another option.
  • Go for street food after dark — MG Road's Chowpatti comes alive after 21:00, and the hot masala milk is a must-try past 22:00.
