About this place
Agra, located about 200 km southeast of Delhi in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is a city synonymous with one of the world's most iconic monuments: the Taj Mahal. As a former capital of the Mughal Empire, Agra is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites — the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and the nearby abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri. For many travelers, the city serves as a key stop on India's Golden Triangle circuit (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur), offering a concentrated dose of Mughal-era architecture and history.
While the city's monumental treasures are undeniably world-class, the broader urban experience can be challenging. Visitors should be prepared for high levels of air pollution, persistent touts and hawkers at major sights, and a city that the Wikivoyage guide describes as having little else to recommend beyond its famous sites. For the vast majority of travelers, a single day in Agra is considered sufficient to visit the main attractions.
The city's recorded history dates back to the 11th century, but its golden age began in 1526 when it became the capital of the Mughal Empire. The Mughals were prolific builders, and their architectural legacy — the white-marble Taj Mahal, the red-sandstone Agra Fort, and the planned city of Fatehpur Sikri — forms the backbone of Agra's modern tourism industry.

- Visit the Taj Mahal at different times of day (dawn and dusk are recommended) to see how the light changes the marble's appearance.

Planning Tips
- Book train tickets well in advance for day trips from Delhi, especially during the high season (October–March). The Shatabdi and Taj Express are recommended.
- Arrive at the Taj Mahal as early as possible (gates open at 6 AM) to beat the crowds. The west gate is closest to the city but busiest; the east gate is usually the least crowded.
- If you want a guide, book a government-approved one. Unlicensed touts often focus on shopping rather than history.
- Note that entry tickets to the Taj Mahal are valid for only 3 hours. Staying longer incurs an extra fee.
- Polluting vehicles are banned near the Taj Mahal; use electric rickshaws, tongas (horse-drawn carriages), or the Agra Metro to access the area.
- Carry a government-issued photo ID (e.g., passport) for entry to the Taj Mahal.
