About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Addis Ababa is the capital and largest city of Ethiopia, a rapidly growing metropolis with an estimated population of over 6 million. Founded in 1886 by King Menelik II and Queen Taytu Betul, it is a relatively young city but serves as an important hub for international diplomacy, hosting the headquarters of the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa. Despite its modern role, the city offers a rich introduction to Ethiopian culture, history, and cuisine.

Addis Ababa is divided into ten boroughs (subcities) and further into wards (kebeles). The city features one of the first light rail systems in sub-Saharan Africa, and recent corridor projects have upgraded many major roads with sidewalks, bike lanes, and bus stops. While many streets lack names, landmarks are the primary navigation tool. The city's attractions range from historic cathedrals and palaces to museums showcasing ancient artifacts, and its cafes and restaurants are ideal for sampling Ethiopian coffee, tej (honey wine), and the national dish injera.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Always carry a second layer for the evening; the diurnal temperature variation is high.
  • Drink only bottled water and avoid raw vegetables that may have been washed in tap water.
  • Use ride-hailing apps like Ride, Feres, or Yango instead of hailing taxis on the street. Ensure plate numbers match before getting in.
  • Have an Ethiopian phone number to use ride-hailing apps and local SIM cards are easy to obtain at Ethiotel or Safaricom shops.
  • Use ATMs at major hotels (Hilton, Sheraton, Radisson Blu) to avoid skimmer scams.
  • Be aware of common scams, especially in Piazza and the airport: pickpockets, fake 'invitations' with hidden costs, and the spitting trick.
  • For walking, stick to major roads with paved sidewalks; smaller streets may have poor or no pedestrian infrastructure.
