About this place
Adapazarı is the chief city of Sakarya province, about 160 km east of Istanbul. It's a long-established industrial centre — historically agricultural, now known for sectors like automobile parts — and serves as a hub for the wider metropolitan area. The city was heavily damaged by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in 1999 but has since been rebuilt.
Most visitors treat Adapazarı as a gateway to the surrounding region, including the thermal spa at Taraklı and the pleasant shores of Lake Sapanca. The city itself is spread out, with a central cluster of restaurants and bars near the railway station and a few historic landmarks.

Things to See
- Justinianus Bridge — completed around 553 AD, this 430 m limestone bridge once carried a military road across the Sakarya River. Only a small stream passes beneath it today, and ongoing repairs mean you can't walk across.
- Tarihi Çark — a historic water wheel that pumped drinking water from the Çark River until 1955. It now forms the centrepiece of a pleasant park.
- Orhan Mosque — the current 19th-century building stands on a 13th-century foundation, about 200 m north of the railway station on Atatürk Cd. It remained closed in 2022.
