About this place

Last updated Jun 11, 2026

Adana is a lively city on the Cilician Plains of central Turkey, straddling the Seyhan River about 50 km from the Mediterranean coast. With a history stretching back over 8,000 years, it has been shaped by a long line of civilizations, from the Hittites and Romans to the Ottomans. The historic core, Tepebağ neighborhood, holds the most interesting sites, including the ancient stone bridge Taşköprü. While Adana is a modern, industrial hub known for agriculture and manufacturing, it offers a blend of cultural heritage, riverside parks, and a distinctive local food scene centered on its famous kebab. The city also has a notably more cosmopolitan feel than many Turkish towns, thanks in part to its proximity to a NATO air base, bringing a surprising array of business hotels and western-style amenities.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Fly into the new Çukurova Airport (opened 2024), 32 km west, with frequent flights from Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir.
  • Trains from Istanbul or Ankara: take the YHT high-speed to Konya, then the daily Toros Ekspresi (6 hours) to Adana – check for disruptions as the line is being upgraded.
  • Long-distance buses from Istanbul take about 13 hours; book with Metro Turizm or Flixbus.
  • The city's metro is a single line; most visitors will find it easier to walk the compact old town, use taxis, or ride the extensive dolmuş (minibus) network.
  • For the beach, head to Mersin (about 90 minutes by regional train) rather than the closer but less impressive Karataş.
  • Look for dining around the old town rim or the station area for the best selection of Adana kebab and other local specialties.
  • Mobile coverage (4G) from all Turkish carriers is reliable in the city and on approach roads.
