About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Abbottabad is a hill-station city in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, sitting at about 1250 meters along the historic Karakoram Highway north of Islamabad. Its elevation brings noticeably cooler air than the plains, making it a popular escape for domestic travelers fleeing the summer heat of Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Peshawar.

Founded in the 1850s as a British military base and district headquarters, the city long served as a key stop on the route toward Gilgit and China. While the completion of the Karakoram Highway reduced its role as a transport bottleneck, Abbottabad remains an important regional junction and a well-regarded center for education.
