About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Aba is a bustling commercial hub in Abia State, South East Nigeria, often called "Enyimba City." With a population of over a million, it serves as a major collecting point for agricultural goods from the surrounding fertile lands, where crops like oil palm, yams, and cassava are grown. The city is famously known for its skilled craftsmen and vibrant trade, centered around the Ariaria International Market, one of the largest markets in the country.

The city is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo people, and both Igbo and English are widely spoken. Its history as a market town established in 1901 has evolved into a dynamic urban center, also hosting institutions like the Abia State University Teaching Hospital and several universities. While the road network is improving, most long-distance travelers arrive by bus from other Nigerian cities or via the railway from Port Harcourt.
